CLINICAL PHILOSOPHICAL APPROACH: As a psychiatrist and internist, Dr. Amin has observed (and supported by clinical research), that both psychiatric and physical concerns of a given patient need to be optimized. The homeostasis between the body and mind (applied through biopsychosocial model) enhances patient outcomes. Additionally, each patient is capable of having the intrinsic motivation to make the right changes in their life to enhance their longevity and vitality. Each evaluation, therefore, involves assessing the patient's psychiatric and medical presentation. Dr. Amin also believes in educating and empowering his patients to be in-charge of their health. The top ethical principles that informs Dr. Amin's decision-making are:
- Beneficence: Dr. Amin attempts to apply evidence to his patients. This begins with cementing the best diagnosis. When no evidence exists in medical literature, then he will apply expert recommendations and clinical guidelines. If it is based on his own experience, he will inform his patients to help them decide about a particular recommendation.
- Nonmaleficence: Dr. Amin's top mantra is to "First, do no harm!" To this end, he is always looking to reduce polypharmacy, and inappropriate prescribing.
- Autonomy: Each patient is their own agent. The patient has the right to make what they think is best for them, even when Dr. Amin may disagree. Autonomy is important in all fields of medicine, but it is especially necessary in psychiatry where the most enduring change comes from within. Dr. Amin preserves patient autonomy through informed consent, truth-telling, and preserving patient confidentiality.
- Justice: Justice is generally interpreted as fair, equitable, and appropriate treatment of persons. This means a fair, equitable, and appropriate distribution of health-care resources determined by justified norms i.e. practice standards. Dr. Amin's aim is to eliminate healthcare disparities for all. This also includes cost-conscious and value-based care i.e. avoiding unnecessary and costly medications, interventions, and tests without clinical evidence for improved healthcare outcomes.
